ROPS - MENDÈS (Catulle). Le Roman d'une nuit. With an etchin - Lot 33
ROPS - MENDÈS (Catulle). Le Roman d'une nuit. With an etching by Félicien Rops. Paris, H[enriette] Doucé, 1883, in-12, frontispiece by Félicien Rops (Rouir, no. 561.4), 70 p., bradel brown half-chagrin with corners, double gilt separating fillet on boards, smooth spine titled in gold, marbled endpapers, 1st cover plate cons. (spine and edges rubbed). Ex-libris of Gustave Nellens. The text is preceded by a letter-preface in which Mendès recounts that he spent a month in prison at Sainte-Pélagie because of the text. The enterprise of "Messieurs Gay et Doucé" [sic], i.e. Jean Gay and Henriette Doucé, in Brussels, lasted from 1877 to 1882. Subsequent editions published under the sole name of Henriette Doucé are rare, fewer than ten. Although the place name of the work is Paris, it was printed in Brussels.
