Paris, Saillant et Nyon, 1771, 4°, [8]-417-[3] p., full contemporary blond calf, 5-ribbed spine, green morocco title-piece, gilt and fleuronné compartments, marbled endpapers (binding rubbed and worn, inner hinge split, browning on false-title and last leaf, inside very fresh). First edition illustrated with 20 folding plates and 3 out-of-text views. Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (Paris, 1729-1811), lawyer, diplomat and mathematician, was above all a great navigator who led the first official French expedition around the world, during which he explored several Polynesian archipelagos and gave his name to the largest island of the Solomons in Melanesia. He visited and described the geography, biology and anthropology of Argentina, Patagonia and the Strait of Magellan, Tahiti, Samoa, the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), the Solomon Islands and the archipelagos of Louisiana and New Britain (now Papua New Guinea), as well as Indonesia. Bougainville's descriptions powerfully illustrate the concept of the bon sauvage, and influenced the utopian thinking of philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau before the advent of the French Revolution. A good copy, complete with all plates.
