BATAILLE, Georges (under the pseudonym Pierre Angélique). Ma - Lot 523
BATAILLE, Georges (under the pseudonym Pierre Angélique). Madame Edwarda (Divinus Deus). Typescript, 11 p., without corrections or annotations, in pink paperback (cover damaged). This typescript presents the text of the original 1941 edition. There were three editions published during Bataille's lifetime: the first, at the end of 1941 (45 copies); the second in 1945 (illustrated by Fautrier, 88 copies); and finally the third, enclosed with the typescript, which is the first in the "public domain". Georges Bataille made almost no alterations between the 1st and 2nd editions, unlike the 3rd, published by Pauvert. "Madame Edwarda" was first published under the pseudonym Pierre Angélique in 1941 by Éditions du Solitaire (clandestine edition by Robert and Élisabeth Godet). It was written between September and October 1941, during the editing of "L'Expérience intérieure". It was one of the first clandestine works to appear during the dark hours of the Occupation.
