TOYEN.- BRETON (André).
The Lamp in the Clock. Frontispiece by Toyen. P., Robert Marin, "Collection l'Âge d'Or" edited by Henri Parisot, (1948), in-12 with very wide margins, br. uncut (qqs. pale russ. on the back of the litho in sanguine and 1 russ. on the title, inside very fresh). Strictly as-published copy with full margins, printed green cover illustrated with a black-and-white photographic reproduction of a collage by Toyen. Second cover, witness size, filled and unstamped, printed in black on Arches vellum. Rare first edition. Limited edition of 2350 copies plus a few copies hors commerce. 1/250 ex. de tête (and not 350 as indicated in the justification), with the original lithograph by Toyen, printed in sanguine on Arches volant. Deemed defective by Breton, this first edition was destroyed, except for the 250 copies of the first edition on Arches, printed on the same date, which were well distributed. It seems that it was the omission from the press copies of the photograph of the author at Château de La Coste that prompted Breton's decision to have them destroyed. A good copy.
