SOUGEZ (Emmanuel). Alphabet. Photographs... - Lot 514 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
SOUGEZ (Emmanuel). Alphabet. Photographs by Sougez. P., Antoine Roche, (1932), in-12 square, publisher's hardback illustrated with full-page photogravures on the boards. First edition with 26 full-page photographs printed in heliogravure on heavy paper. During the 1930s, publishers showed great enterprise in employing photography to illustrate children's books, bringing in some of the best photographers and using the medium in ways both realistic and fantastical. As in his children's book "Regarde!" published the same year, Emmanuel Sougez (1889-1972), here uses simple but effective photographs of everyday things to illustrate the letters of the alphabet. "At the time, France was assimilating European typographic formulas, which Parisian publisher Henri Jonquières and photographer-illustrator Emmanuel Sougez adapted in a trilingual photographic alphabet book, Alphabet. They brought together the research of the French group led by Charles Peignot, whose ideas were circulated in the magazine Arts et Métiers Graphiques, and that of representatives of the Nouvelle Typographie group, to create a work of synthesis in which they combined two optical languages: typography and photography" (Juliette Lavie). A very fine copy.
