Marie-Alain Couturier (1897-1954), is a Dominican priest, artist and art theorist. He was one of the main actors of the renewal of the sacred art in France after the Second World War. Charged in 1937, with Father Pius Raymond Régamey, with the direction of the review "L'Art sacré", he developed the need to break with academicism to call upon the most famous and talented artists regardless of their religious practices: Pierre Bonnard, Fernand Léger, Jean Lurçat, Germaine Richier, Georges Rouault, Jean Bazaine, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Jacques Lipchitz and Marc Chagall, among others. One of the most beautiful achievements remains, without a doubt, the chapel of the Rosary of Vence by Matisse. Built between 1949 and 1951 with the help of the great architect Auguste Perret, it was entirely designed by Henri Matisse who considered it the masterpiece of his life.
