[CROISSET (Francis de). La Féérie cinghalaise. P., Grasset, "Bibliothèque Grasset", 1929, 8°, 279 p., Jotau binding in full red bakelite, smooth spine titled on inlaid metal plate, hinged, upper board composed of a set of horizontal grooves with a titled and inlaid piece of metal, bevelled boards, counterpanes and endpapers of fancy paper, 1st cover on boards. (spine cracked). Copy on pure vellum (ex. marked A 33)./ MAURIAC (François). Le Noeud de vipères. Same ed. and coll. 1932, 8°, 311 p., bound in full black bakelite by Jotau, smooth spine titled on inlaid metal plate, hinges hinged, upper board composed of a set of horizontal grooves with a piece of titled and inlaid metal, bevelled boards, counterpanes and endpapers of fancy paper, 1st cover on board. (spine cracked). Deluxe edition published the same year as the original. Numbered edition on pure vellum. A revolutionary process, the so-called Jotau bindings (contraction of the first name and surname of the inventor, JOseph TAUpin) are made of a resin similar to bakelite, dyed in the mass, and are characterized by boards dissociated from the spine and attached to the latter by a hinge centered on a metal rod, which allows the book to be opened completely. An avant-garde technique, anticipating Jean de Gonet's work on the Revorim, Jotau bindings are rarely found, and even less often in good condition, due to the fragility of the resin, which is close to Bakelite / Set. 2 vols.
