PALISSOT DE MONTENOY. Theatre and various... - Lot 24 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
PALISSOT DE MONTENOY. Theatre and various works. London and in Paris, Duchesne, 1763, 3 vols. in-12, Portrait, XXII-[2]-351-1 bl. p.; 386 p. (the first 14 in roman numerals); frontispiece, XLIV-384-[1]-1 bl. p., full contemporary brown calf, decorated spine. Some defects, but a good copy. Charles Palissot de Montenoy, born in Nancy in 1730 and died in Paris in 1814, was a little-known playwright from Lorraine, then from France, admirer and disciple of Voltaire, but paradoxically often denounced as an anti-philosophical opponent of the philosophical party, especially for his criticism of Diderot and the Encyclopedists. He is the author of the comedy, The Philosophers, which had a huge success and caused a scandal in 1760. Uncommon.
