[MERCIER (Louis-Sébastien). Tableau de Paris.... - Lot 19 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
[MERCIER (Louis-Sébastien). Tableau de Paris. New edition [in vols. 2-4: original added] corrected and enlarged. Amsterdam, 1782, 4 vols. in-12 bound in two volumes, 19th c. half black cloth, XVI-399-1 bl.; [4]-336; [4]-340; [4]-300 p. (a few tears without loss of paper). Largely original edition. After the first edition in 2 volumes in 1781 at Neufchatel, Mercier increased this edition to 4 volumes in 1782 and added 4 more volumes in 1783. Further additions were made in 1789, and in 1798 in a book entitled Le Nouveau Paris. This edition is not satisfied with simply repeating the first two books published in 1781, the author has not only profoundly reworked the whole to the extent of his additions but he has also recomposed the articles. The most famous painting of Parisian manners on the eve of the Revolution where all the archetypes are sifted by jumping from one subject to another according to the observations: characters (bibliophiles, booksellers, bourgeois, servants, bankers, Jews, children, grocers, executioners, book renters....), famous places (Bastille, Temple, Palais-Royal...), cultural and night life (shows, cabarets, fairs, comedies, walks, gardening...), miscellaneous (Parmentier's potato, flowerpots, writing to doors...). Interesting from a historical and sociological point of view and amusing by the anecdotes. Ref. Michel Schlup, "Les querelles et intrigues autour de l'édition du Tableau de Paris de L.S. Mercier", in La Société Typographie de Neuchâtel, 1769-1789. Neuchâtel, 2002, pp. 131-141.
