Mathematics - L'HOSPITAL [(Guillaume de)].... - Lot 12 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
Mathematics - L'HOSPITAL [(Guillaume de)]. Analysis of the infinitesimal. Followed by a new commentary for the understanding of the most difficult parts of this work. Avignon, Veuve Girard et François Seguin..., 1768, 8°, [4]-XXXI-1 bl.-380 p., 8 folding plates, 19th c. brown half cloth (spine detached, stamps, etc.). (spine detached, stamps, browning). Rules of a reading room pasted on the back of the false title. Guillaume de L'Hospital (1661-1704), a French mathematician, was the first author to devote a work to differential calculus in French. He is still known today for the rule that bears his name and that allows the calculation of the value of a limit for a fraction where the numerator and the denominator both tend towards zero. He was a major figure in the development of mathematical calculation on the European continent. He advanced his research not only through his scientific work but also through his many contacts, notably through his correspondence with Leibniz, Bernoulli and Huygens.
