P., Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, 1895, 8° square, green half-chagrin with corners, gilt separating fillets on the boards, spine with 5 fine nerves, author, title, date and head gilt, cover and spine cons. First edition printed at 409 copies, numbered 1/388 Hollande antique (ex. n° 36), initialled by André Walter. Bears a letter followed by a quotation on the false title: "to Félicien Rops / as a token of admiration / André Gide / Sit Tityrus Orpheus / Virgil (Eglog. VIII, 55)". A novel that was a precursor of literary modernity, "Paludes" is a playful satire of Parisian circles and symbolist circles in which Gide does not spare himself.
