BERNANOS, Georges (1888-1948) is a French writer. In his works, Bernanos explores the spiritual struggle of Good and Evil, particularly through the character of the Catholic priest bent on saving the souls of his lost parishioners, or through characters with tragic fates as in Nouvelle histoire de Mouchette. BERNANOS, Georges. Letters. Five letters, perhaps six, addressed to Frédéric LEFÈVRE (1889 -1949), French novelist, essayist and literary critic. He participated, with Maurice Martin du Gard and Jacques Guenne, in the foundation of the Nouvelles littéraires in October 1922. He was editor-in-chief of this weekly magazine devoted to literature from 1922 to 1949. 1. Undated (pencil note: ca. 1926), autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-4°. Thanks Lefèvre for sending the "two admirable little volumes". He is on holiday in Lourdes where he works 10 hours a day and never goes out. "My secret, if I have one, is perhaps to write each of my books as if it had just been the last. "Envelope preserved.- 2. 06.01.1927 (postmark), autograph mourning card signed. Announcing the death of his father: "I do not want a banal announcement to tell you that my father has died. "3. 20.10.1927 (postmark), autograph letter signed, 2 pages and one line on mourning paper in-8 (missing at bottom). Congratulations: "this amphibian Herriot had this time the happy flipper, and [...] he placed well his red ribbon. 4. 25.06.1932 (date of the post office), autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-4. He reads Lefèvre's letter with delay, but agrees to an article in Les Nouvelles Littéraires. "I almost held a grudge against you for your implausible presentation of the last interview. And then I told myself that perhaps this was the image you naively had of me. Besides, life is too short to ever hold a serious grudge against anyone. God's sweet mercy on me and on you! God's sweet mercy on all of you. "Around 1833, the year of the creation of Le Jour by Léon Bailly, of which Bernanos speaks in the letter, 2 pages in-4. No correspondent, but seems to be Lefèvre. With two letters and a telegram addressed to Edmond LIMBOURG (1910-1992). 1. Undated, but probably Sept. 1946, autograph letter signed, 3 pages in-4°. He could not meet Limbourg in Switzerland and is very busy: he has nine people with him... He was also in Germany (French zone), invited by General Koenig. He wants to return, because "Nothing is more urgent for the future and peace of the world - if the world still has a future - than to gather and save the debris of the old German Christianity. "2. 27.09.1946 (postmark), autograph letter signed, 2 pages in-4°. Apologizes for the delay for which he is not solely responsible. He accepts the date of November 23 and warns Béguin. "It will always be a good memory for me when I break the ice in one of the concentration camps of the White Sea Canal. "Undated telegram to Edmond Limbourg (probably shortly before November 28, 1946): "Heard Thursday, November 28, in Ghent, friends Bernanos. An undated letter is attached, name of recipient added in pencil: Robert Valery-Radot. Asks his correspondent what is happening at Plon. Also enclosed are 2 photos, one of Bernanos (22 x 17 cm) and the other probably of Edmond Limbourg (17 x 12.5 cm) / Set of 9 letters, 1 telegram, 2 photos.
