Superb copy in a lined binding by E. and... - Lot 61 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
Superb copy in a lined binding by E. and A. Maylander. Maylander.- VERLAINE (Paul). Wisdom. P., Société générale de Librairie catholique ; Victor Palmé ; Brux, Ancienne Maison Henri Goemaere, 1881, large 8°, full caviar morocco, spine with 4 nerves, author, title and date gilt, edges gilt, double gilt fillet on the edges, ivory morocco lined boards set with a mosaic garland underlined by a double set of gilt fillets, double olive silk endpapers, cover and spine cons, bound case (spine very slightly faded) (binding signed E. and A. Maylander). First edition of which some poems were composed by Verlaine during his detention in Mons. Likely edition of 500 copies on satin vellum. No large paper. "The conversion in prison will dictate to Verlaine the admirable mystical poems of Sagesse, which inaugurates a religious poetry in more traditional forms, leaving place, in parallel, to profane, satirical or sensual, even gaudy volumes, where the verse sometimes cousins with the mirliton and is only too seldom the thing flown away. A superb copy.
