VERHAEREN (Emile).
Japanese images. Illustrations by Kwasson. Text published by T. Haségawa. Tokyo, Takejiro Hasegawa, [1896], 8° oblong, Japanese-style paperback, illustrated cover (defr. cover and leg. stained, pricking and clear wetting at the head of vol., 1st f. white restored, angular brownish stain at the end of vol.). First edition of the 5 poems by Verhaeren illustrated with 14 double-page prints by Kwasson, pseudonym of Munetaro Suzuki. This work determined the emergence of a symbolist school of poetry in Japan. Our copy, presumably from 1896, bears the address on the top cover plate: "T. Hasegawa / 10 Hiyoshicho / Tokyo", the address where the printer lived from 1890 to 1901. Rare copy sought after for its very beautiful wood prints in Kwasson colours.
