WHITE (Cl.). American War 1780-1783. Campaign diary. P., Libr. militaire J. Dumaine, 1881, 8°, 134 p., bordeaux half-shell, smooth spine threaded and titled gold, speckled edges (russet on the edges). Ex. enriched with a shipment (dated March 1890) from Maurice La Chesnais, great-grandson of Claude Blanchard, to Agénor Bardoux, French minister and man of letters (1829-1897). Claude Blanchard (1742-1803) fought in the American War of Independence with the French army. He left Brest on 2 May 1780 on the Conqueror with Gabriel de Coriolis, his brother-in-law. This diary was edited by his grandson Maurice La Chesnais, under the cover of anonymity. Unusual.
