Good ex. New ed. (orig. Paris 1689) of this relation by the French traveller J. Thévenot (1633-1667). Ill. on copper of a frontispiece repeated in t. 3 and of 50 off-text, including 1 portrait of the author dressed in the oriental style and 12 fold-out plates. Picturesque plates often depicting animated or dramatic episodes (tortures, executions..., waterspouts at sea...). Nephew of Melchisédech Thévenot, author and editor of travel stories, J. Thévenot developed a strong desire for travel at a very young age; a chance meeting with the orientalist Barthélémy d'Herbelot determined his taste for the Levant. The first 4 volumes relate his journey in Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Arabia, Palestine, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, Persia..., volume 5 relates his last trip to India. Missing in Chadenat.
