ROUSSET [DE MISSY, Jean]. The interests and claims of the powers of Europe are based on the treaties from those of Utrecht inclusively, and on the evidence of their particular rights. Second edition. The Hague, Adrien Moetjens, 1736, 3 vols. 4°, XXIV-1017-1 blanche p.; title, 816-[14] p., 2 family trees folded (small tear without missing), and [8]-879-[39] p., , full brown calf of the time, back with decorated nerves (traces of wear and rubbing, back of the vol. 1 partially glued back, burnished paper). Good copy. Jean Rousset de Missy (1686-1762) was a French jurist, historian and journalist who made his career mainly in the United Provinces because he was a Huguenot. He is renowned for his writings on international law. Rousset's "Les Intérêts presens" is the reference on international law for contemporary diplomats. He emphasizes the importance of voluntary, or secondary, law: by ratifying treaties, monarchs, republics and cities have regularly amended, modified or created international law. As far as natural law is concerned, Rousset refers to the 17th century theorists Grotius and Pufendorf.
