PASQUIER (Estienne). Les Recherches de la... - Lot 46 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
PASQUIER (Estienne). Les Recherches de la France. Wake up and increase of a book, and of several chapters by the same author. Paris, Laurent Somnius, 1607, 4°, [18] p., portrait, 1175-1 blanche-[84] p., bound in 2 vol. (the second vol. begins at p. 647) in the 18th c. in full brown calf of the period, spine with decorated nerves, title and tomaison pieces (clear wettings, qqs stitches, worm work in the margin of the small background without consequence, a blow to a cut, qqs snags). Nice condition. Partly original edition with Book VII, table of contents, many additions and a portrait of Pasquier by Thomas de Leu. This portrait had been made in 1583 in Troyes and had never been included in the editions. It is the last edition during the author's lifetime. A very famous encyclopaedic work, "Les Recherches de la France" stands out among all works of this kind by its radical novelty. Pasquier can be considered as the father of modern history, History being born as a discipline and moving away from legend and literature. Chap. VII, which is very different from the others since these were concerned with research on the Antiquity of France, deals with the formation of the French language; one part is devoted to the Pléiade, of which Pasquier was one of the members. Chapter VI was already concerned with the origin of French poetry.
