Original edition in full morocco - FÉNELON (François de SALIGNAC de LA MOTTE). Les Avantures de Telemaque fils d'Ulysse. First edition according to the original manuscript. Paris, Florentin Delaulne, 1717, 2 vol. in-12, in continuous pagination, frontispiece, f. of title, LVIII-[2]-267-1bl. p., 12 plates, and frontispiece, f. of title, pp. 269-526, [2] p. , 12 plates, 1 folding map, 19th c. binding in full red morocco, Du Seuil plates framed twice with a triple gilt fillet, the inner triple gilt fillet with a gilt fleuron at the corners, large gilt Z crossing a crown in the centres of the plates, double gilt fillet on the cups, small inner gilt lace, richly decorated spines, gilt edges. Superb copy. Ex-libris. The illustration is composed of 2 frontispieces, the first one proposing a portrait of the author engraved by Duflos jeune after Bailleul, a vignette with the royal coat of arms at the head of the epistle, 24 plates engraved by Giffart after Bonnart and a folding map of the Voyages de Télémaque engraved by Berey after Rousset. First edition of Télémaque, in conformity with the original manuscript, published by the Marquis de Fénelon, the author's great-nephew, and dedicated to Louis XV. This edition set the text of the work which for the first time is divided into 24 books. It contains Ramsay's discourse on "the epic poetry and [...] the excellence of the poem of Telemachus" which is a defense of the book against the criticisms it may have suffered. At the end is an Ode de jeunesse by Fénelon (Brunet, II, 1212-1213; Tchemerzine, III, 206; Cohen, 379-380).
