D'ARTAGNAN or DARTAIGNAN - Joseph de Montesquiou... - Lot 14 - Les ventes Damien Voglaire SRL
D'ARTAGNAN or DARTAIGNAN - Joseph de Montesquiou d'Artagnan (1651-1729), known as Count d'Artagnan, Lieutenant General of the armies, Captain-Lieutenant of the Musketeers. Certificate signed by "Le Comte Dartaignan Capitaine-Lieutenant de la Premiere Compagnie des Mousquetaires" for the departure of "Sieur De Forestier Sieur Du Fort marechal des Logis" who served well for 46 years and 8 months. The king grants him a pension of fifteen hundred pounds. Dated December 18, 1722. Signed Artaignan. He comes from the d'Artagnan branch of the de Montesquiou family, one of the most illustrious in Gascony and one of the oldest families of the French nobility. Orphaned by his father, he left his native Gascony to be raised in Paris by his uncle, Charles de Batz Castelmor, the famous d'Artagnan who served as a model for the "Three Musketeers". Like his cousin, the future Marshal Pierre de Montesquiou d'Artagnan, he fought alongside his uncle when d'Artagnan died at the siege of Maastricht in 1673. A few years later, he succeeded him as Captain-Lieutenant of the first company of Mousquetaire Gris (the King wanted to remain nominally "captain" of the Musketeers, hence the fact that the effective command of the unit was a "captain-lieutenant"). He became lieutenant-general and was then appointed governor of Nîmes.
