ROUSSEAU (Victor). A collection of 6 signed autograph letter - Lot 796
ROUSSEAU (Victor). A collection of 6 signed autograph letters spanning four decades (from 1909 to 1950), totaling 12 handwritten pages. A valuable collection of archival materials chronicling more than 40 years of the artistic, intellectual, and personal life of one of the greatest Belgian sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This collection includes letters addressed to Gustave Van Zype (1869–1955), an influential art critic, playwright, and permanent secretary of the Royal Academy of Belgium, as well as to Lucien Christophe, Director General of Fine Arts and Literature. In particular, the correspondence discusses his recognition following his major retrospective at the Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels, expressions of gratitude following the acquisition of his famous marble sculpture "Alice" by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, as well as a poignant note written in the wake of the painful loss of his niece Alice: "Such a void is forming around us that I wonder how I will ever find the joy of work again." A highly coherent collection.
