CLAUS (Hugo) and OVERZIER (Elly). A collection of about twen - Lot 657
CLAUS (Hugo) and OVERZIER (Elly). A collection of about twenty autograph documents (handwritten and typewritten letters, postcards, an announcement, a photograph of the young Hugo Claus, and one postcard decorated with small ballpoint pen drawings), sent during the 1950s and early 1960s to the sculptor Florent Welles and his wife Suzanne. Text in Dutch. This friendly and artistic correspondence chronicles the writer’s nomadic life and his close bond with his friend Florent Welles. Claus candidly discusses his literary work, his theatrical and cinematic projects, and his conflicted relationship with the visual arts. In particular, he confides that he regularly destroys his own works. Claus provides chronicles of the artistic scene of the time. Frequently cited are the painters Karel Appel (his escapades in Venice), Corneille, Alechinsky, Burri, and Raveel, as well as the writers and poets Simon Vinkenoog, Hans Andreus, and Jan Walravens. The Letters document the couple’s financial struggles in Rome and their summer travels to Saint-Tropez and Ibiza. A truly beautiful collection.
