WAUGH (Evelyn). *Decline and Fall*. An Illustrated Novelette. London, Chapman & Hall Ltd, 1928, 8°, 288 pp., original binding in red and black snakeskin-patterned cloth, plain spine, author, title, and publisher’s name in gold lettering (spine repaired, head and foot caps and corners rubbed, first and last pages discolored, interior in very fresh condition). Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of Torella, son of Mary Gardner. First edition (marked as the 3rd printing, published 3 months after the first). Copy inscribed with: “Mary / from Evelyn / with his love / December 31, 1928.” The recipient is Mary Gardner, whose sister Evelyn had married Waugh a few months earlier. The author’s first novel, accompanied by a second volume from 1929 (4th printing), in its original binding, inscribed to “Elizabeth & Richard / with love from / Evelyn”. The dedicants were Plunkett Greene, writers and close friends of Waugh./ Set of 2 vols.
