MAGRITTE, MARIËN (Marcel). "Grande Baisse et la fête continu - Lot 751
MAGRITTE, MARIËN (Marcel). "Grande Baisse et la fête continue." [Brussels, 1962], dimensions: 33.5 x 16.4 cm (folded in half). Published on the occasion of the major Magritte retrospective at the Casino de Knokke in 1962, this leaflet, titled “René Magritte: Les Travaux forcés,” depicts the 100 Belgian franc banknote bearing the painter’s likeness. It also includes a satirical text signed by Magritte and a price list of works at ridiculously low prices. With this leaflet, Mariën sought to denounce Magritte’s tendency to seek financial gain from his works. It was distributed the day before the opening and fooled most of its readers, including André Breton, who thanked the painter for his leaflet before apologizing, saying that he “was prone to overestimating the power of a certain kind of humor from across the Scheldt.”
