[Belgian Congo].—An album titled in Indian ink “Images of Ki - Lot 279
[Belgian Congo].—An album titled in Indian ink “Images of Kivu,” containing about forty unmounted photographs (approximately 18 x 24 cm). A rare record of the eastern province of Kivu during World War II. A subheading introduces the section: “Photographs taken in the Rutshuru region and Albert National Park.” Each photograph is accompanied by a handwritten caption. Main subjects featured: 1. Landscapes and volcanology: spectacular panoramas of Lake Kivu, Mount Mikeno, snow-capped Mount Karisimbi, and the interior of the active caldera of Mount Nyamlagira.—2. Wildlife of the Virunga: groups of hippos emerging from the Rutshuru River, herds of antelopes lurking on the plains of Lake Edward, etc.—3. Ethnography and scenes of daily life: ceremonial gatherings (village festivals), ritual portraits, elite spear dances, traditional polyphonic songs (Pygmies), introspective portraits, etc. High-contrast prints that have retained the full depth of their blacks and the brilliance of their whites, without any color distortion. A beautiful collection
