8°, [4]-XXIV-367 p. ; 393 p., half blond basane, smooth flowered spine, red and black morocco title-pieces, yellow speckled edges, ownership mark on title (1 bit split). First edition in in-8 format, including 1 map and 6 folding views. We offer here the first 2 volumes of this important work on the Alps. Horace-Benedict de Saussure (1740-1799), a physicist, geologist and naturalist from Geneva, travelled the Alps in all directions for thirty years. His ascent of Mont-Blanc, reaching the summit on August 3, 1787, and the 17 days he spent the following year on the Col du Géant are milestones in the history of mountaineering and science.
